AWARD 2020

WE ARE GLAD TO ANOUNCE THAT THE THIRD EDITION OF THE MARIBOR PHOTOBOOK AWARD IS DONE. THE BOOKS ARE ON DISPLAY AT UGM – THE MARIBOR ART GALLERY.

READY FOR THE THIRD EDITION

Thank you all for participating! 134 books from all over the world arrived for the third edition of The Maribor photobook award. The jury session took place this Sunday, September 13th. The jury, which consisted of Tanja Lažetić (artist), Jasna Jernejšek (curator and critic specialized in photobooks), Michael Kollmann (Photobook curator at the Westlicht museum Vienna).

They have chosen one winner, 2 runner ups and 10 honorable mentions.

Old Tjikko – Nicolai Howalt (Fabrikbooks, 2019) / winner

The book Old Tjikko Nicolai Howalt grasps the open call theme changing realities, the perception of borders and the notion of reality on different levels at the same Time. 97 Images developed from the same negative show a picture of the ancient tree taken in 2019, printed on the different papers. The variety of papers, all of them already expired, have the specific characteristics which affect the appearance of each image, showing imperfections, different tonalities. This gives the impression that we see a different tree at the different times. In fact we are looking at the same picture. This changes the perception of time and photography as a medium.

Event Horizon – Stephenie Roland ( The Eriskay connection, 2019) / runner up

The book Event Horizon of Stephenie Roland is an emotional rollercoaster of a dystopian future in indigo blue. The constructed and fictional narrative and a well-paced sequencing creates a more and more ominous felling.

Death Landscapes – Hubert Humka (Blow up press, 2018) / runner up

Death Landscapes of Hubert Humka takes us on the dubious journey through the landscapes  which are haunted by pain and violence. Through the combination of archive pictures, found photos, personal correspondence and a diary it shows us the complex history of each specific place.

10 honorable mentions (in no particular order)
